Supertramp "Take The Long Way Home" Sheet Music Download Printable PDF Score SKU 1241087

I had always imagine this song as being two guys friends whom decided to get away from home to do some activity together. The narrative of the song would by his friend who knows him well, tries to console him, as best as a guy could. Not having any real answers to his problem he gets to enjoy their moment together - in the now.

Anyway, enjoy the songs, they are amazing works of art. The band were initially a prog-rock group, but starting with their third album, Crime of the Century , they began moving towards a more pop-oriented sound. They reached their commercial peak with 1979's Breakfast in America, which yielded the international top 10 singles "The Logical Song", "Breakfast in America", "Goodbye Stranger", and "Take the Long Way Home". Their other top 40 hits included "Dreamer" , "Give a Little Bit" , and "It's Raining Again" . In 1983, Hodgson left the group to pursue a solo career. Davies took over as the band's sole leader until 1988, after which they disbanded and periodically reformed in various configurations.

Take the Long Way Home (Supertramp song)

To grow, they have to realize there is more to life than just work. This is one of my favorite all time songs. In my opinion it’s about a guy who is probably in his mid thirties. A wife, a couple of kids and a well paying but unsatisfying job. When he was younger he had great dreams and aspirations and thought he would be great, powerful, achieve something, only to find that is life has turned out to be ordinary. Although marvelously well written the lyrics of this song is somewhat depressing and it's a step away for an ordinary middle aged dude to commit suicide.

Whatever the case, i'm sure he has drawn a lot of this from personal experiences. I always thought the meaning of, "take the long way home" was another way of saying, "take time to smell the roses". Don't worry about impressing others; don't worry about what your wife thinks of you; don't worry that your life's a mess; just relax and enjoy the little things in life - the things you only notice when you slow down and take the long way. I'm quite sure about the meaning and it's different than the comments I saw here. I think it's about realizing what is truly important in life.

That line which reads "...who´s to blame when you´re not around? You TOOK THE LONG WAY HOME ". As they say, we gotta read between the lines. That causes him to rethink his life and split right at that very moment. Especially with words that can be interpret as a person being loved by many who dont really him, and enjoyed the crowd's praises. Outside of that arena he has to deal with the realities of home life and his harshest critics. Too long being in one place doing the same thing for years makes one wonder if you could have been someone other than yourself - a much better you.

More Songfacts:

The band's 1988 touring lineup was almost the same as it had been in '85/'86, but with Brad Cole continuing in place of Scott Page and percussionist Steve Reid instead of guitarist Carl Verheyen. For the next album, Indelibly Stamped, released in June 1971 in both the UK and US, Frank Farrell and Kevin Currie replaced Palmer and Millar, while Hodgson switched to guitar and Davies served as a second lead singer. With Palmer's departure, Hodgson and Davies wrote and composed separately for this and the band's subsequent albums. The record sold even less than their debut. In the aftermath, all members gradually quit except Hodgson and Davies, and Miesegaes withdrew his financial support in October 1972.

In 1973 auditions to replace the departed Curry and Winthrop started and introduced Bob Siebenberg (initially credited as Bob C. Benberg; drums and percussion) and John Helliwell , completing the lineup in the summer of 1973. Hodgson would also begin introducing compositions featuring keyboards in the band in addition to guitar. This lineup of Supertramp would remain in place for the next ten years. I've always assumed that this song was about him and his failed or about to fail marriage.

After that, Davies and Hodgson began working together again, recording demos of two new songs, "You Win, I Lose" and "And the Light". But disagreements over management prompted them to part ways once again soon after, with both songs eventually appearing, sans Hodgson, on Supertramp's next release in 1997. Davies later explained, "We'd been out there for about 20 years just recording and touring and it seemed time to have a break with no ideas as to if or when we would come back. We decided not to actually say anything, just sort of fade away like an old soldier." A search for new members brought aboard Dougie Thomson , who had done stand-in gigs with the band since Farrell's departure in February 1972.
